The House of 1000 Mirrors
Long ago in a *** all, faraway village, there was a place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A *** all, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit.
When he arrived, he hounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To hisgreat surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his.
He *** iled a great *** ile, and was answered with 1000 great *** iles just as warm and firendly. As he left the House, he thought to himself, "This is a wonderful place. I will e back and visit it often."

When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him.
As he left, he thought to himself, "That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again."

All his life, Shen Nong had a crystal abdomen, and one could clearly see all of his internal organs. At that time, humans were often getting sick and even dying because they ate things indiscriminately [not knowing if they were good or bad]. Shen Nong determinedly tasted everything everywhere; the good-tasting things he put in a bag on his left side, those were for people to eat; the bad-tasting things he put in a bag on his right side, and those were used for medicine.
The first time, Shen Nong tasted a *** all fresh leaf. As this leaf fell into his stomach, it cleaned every inch of his insides so that every organ top and bottom was fresh and cool, as if [the leaf] was somehow on patrol [making the rounds], so Shen Nong called it “chá” [to investigate / check], and later generations of men called it “chá” [tea]. Shen Nong put it in the bag on the right. The second time, Shen Nong tasted a little light red flower that looked like a butterfly, which was sweet and delicious, with an exotic *** ell that filled his nostrils, so he called it “licorice”. He put it in the bag on the left. In this way, Shen Nong diligently tasted all manner of flora, and every time he was poisoned, he used tea to rescue himself. Before long, the bag on his left contained 47,000 kinds of flowers, grasses, roots and leaves, and the right side had 398,000 kinds.
But one day, Shen Nong tasted “heartbreak grass”, and this poison was too terrible, so there wasn’t enough time to eat the tea leaves to detoxify and he died. He sacrificed himself to save humanity, so people call him the “Bodhisattva of Medicine”, and people forever memorate him through this story.
A teacher said to her class:”Who was the first man?”“George Washington,”a little boy shouted promptly.
“How do you make out that George Washington was the first man?”asked the teacher, *** iling indulgently.“Because,” said the little boy, “he was first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”But at this point a larger boy held up his hand.“Well,”said the teacher to him, “who do you think was the first man?”
“I don’t know what his name was,”said the larger boy, “but I know it wasn’t George Washington, ma’am, because the history book says George Washington married a widow, so, of course, there must have been a man ahead of him.”

In ancient times, a man surnamed Dong in the State of Wei was interested in nothing but keeping cats.
He kept over 100 cats in his home, which caught and ate all the rats in the house.
Later, as there were no more rats, the cats were so hungry that they meowed all the time. Dong had to buy meat from the market every day to feed them.
Day after day, year after year, the cats multiplied. As they ate meat every day, they even didn't know there were rats in the world which could be caught and eaten. They meowed whenever they were hungry, and whenever they meowed, they were fed with meat. After they ate their fill, they were happy and carefree, lazy and sluggish, and had nothing to do all day.
In the south of the city, one house was plagued with rats. The rats ran amuck in swarms. Once it so happened that a rat fell into a jar. The master of the house hastened to Dong's home to borrow a cat to catch the rat.
The cat from the Dong family saw the rat in the jar stick up its pointed ears, stare with a pair of pitch-black eyes, shake its red whiskers and squeak. The cat didn't know what a freak the rat was. It only followed the rat moving around on the mouth of the jar, and dared not get into it.
The master was furious at this and pushed the cat down into the jar. At this moment, the cat was panic-stricken and howled loudly at the rat. After a while, the rat eventually found that this cat had no other tricks, so it bit the cat's foot. The Dong's cat was so frightened that it exerted all its strength and made one jump out of the jar and ran away.
A civilian named Shentu Dun in Luoyang obtained an unearthed tripod of the Han Dynasty from Shenchuan, Chang'an.
On the tripod, the crisscross designs of clouds and ancient hornless dragons were bright and clear. Lu Sheng, his neighbour on the west, took a fancy to it instantly. He asked a copper *** ith to cast a tripod in imitation, soaked and dyed it with a strange decoction, dug a pit and buried it underground.
After three years, he dug it out. Owing to the decoction and corrosion of the earth, thecopper surface of the tripod changed and looked very much like Shentu Dun's genuine tripod.
One day, Lu Sheng presented this fake tripod to an influential official, who was so pleased as if he had got a treasure that he invited guests to a banquet to appreciate it together.
At the time, Shentu Dun was also present. He knew in his heart that Lu Sheng's tripod was a fake. He said: "I also have a tripod of about the same shape as this one. But I don't know which one is genuine."
The influential official asked him to fetch it at once. After he examined it for a long time, he said: "This one is not genuine."
The guests also chimed in and said one after another: "It is indeed not genuine."
Shentu Dun was quite perturbed and argued on just grounds, but the others rallied together to attack him, ridiculed and even insulted him, so he said no more.
When he returned home, he sighed: "I didn't know until today the power of authority, which can confound right with wrong and pass off the fake as the real thing."
Once upon a time, there was a young girl wearing girl wearing a strandof precious pearls around her neck and a jade loop around her waist, and carrying a great deal of gold with her.
One day, while walking in the hills, she encountered a bandit and was very much frightened.
When the bandit saw the gold, silver and other treasures, an evil thought occurred to him. Holding a weapon in his hand, he intended to rob her. The young girl was scared out of her wits. Trembling all over and not daring to look at him squarely in the face, she quickly bent and knelt down before the bandit, begging him piteously, and saying that she was even willing to marry him to be his concubine.
Yet, the atrocious bandit still killed her in the end.
It is thus clear that one should never xiaogushi8 expect mercy from a bandit.
