Posters are invitations for performances such as plays, movies, or sports events. The name "poster" originated in Shanghai. In the past, people in Shanghai often referred to professional theatrical performances as "hai" and the actors performing in those shows as "xia hai". Perhaps because of this relationship, people started calling them "hai bao", which means "poster".

Over time, the term "poster" has evolved beyond being exclusive to professional theater performances. It has become a form of advertisement used to disseminate information about theater, movies, sports competitions, artistic performances, conferences, and more. Some posters also feature artistic design. Like advertisements, posters serve the purpose of introducing certain objects or events to the general public. However, posters are specifically designed to be displayed in screening or performance venues and on the streets. Posters with artistic designs are a type of promotion for movies, theater, and sports.

Posters, also known as "zha tie", "hai bao", or "xuan chuan hua", belong to outdoor advertising. They are distributed in various public places such as streets, theaters, exhibitions, commercial districts, stations, docks, and parks. They are also known as "instant" street art in foreign countries. Compared to other types of advertisements, posters have the characteristics of large images, extensive content, rich artistic expression, and strong long-distance viewing effects.

Posters are a common form of advertisement that is commonly used for movies, theater, competitions, artistic performances, and other events. Posters usually need to clearly state the nature of the event, the organizer, time, and location. The language used in posters should be concise, while the form should be innovative and visually appealing.

The origin of movie posters can be traced back to December 28, 1895, when the Lumière brothers in France screened short films like "Arrival of a Train" to an audience of 35 people in a restaurant in Paris. The poster titled "Lumière Films" might be the world's first movie poster.

Early movie posters were purely used for advertising movies, much like most promotional posters seen in stores today. They were hand-drawn and are now rarely seen. Early famous Hollywood movies like "Gone with the Wind", "Breakfast at Tiffany's", and "Casablanca" had hand-drawn posters that are still highly valued for their artistic value.

With the popularity of movies and advancements in movie poster production techniques, movie posters have become art pieces appreciated for their beautiful images, unique presentation techniques, and rich cultural significance. However, foreign poster collectors generally only collect original movie posters, particularly the first few editions, which are highly sought after due to their scarcity and potential value appreciation.

Movie posters and other movie-related products can be categorized into two functional groups. The first type is for advertising and promotion, typically labeled with "For Promotion". These are mainly used by movie companies for advertisement and as giveaways for audiences. The first type of product cannot be sold. The second type is intended for sale. Movie posters, postcards, keychains, souvenir cards, mugs, and t-shirts seen in Shanghai are all movie-related merchandise. Movies and movie-related merchandise have become a cultural phenomenon, influencing generations and becoming a part of countless lives.

Today's movie posters are often beautifully designed. Even for the same movie, different countries may have different presentation styles and possibly highlight different themes. A regular movie poster may only have one or two layouts, while a popular blockbuster may have dozens of different layouts. The movie "Titanic" probably has the most poster variations to date.
